India's cabinet committee on security on Wednesday approved the purchase of 36 fighter jets from France's Dassault, a senior Indian defence ministry official said.
"The deal was approved at the meeting in the evening. It will now be formally signed by Indian and French defence ministers on September 23 in New Delhi," the unnamed official told AFP.
The official said that other details including the exact amount and formalities "will become clear after the signing event".
According to local media reports, the Indian govement has agreed to pay around $8.8 billion for the fighter jets.
The purchase of Rafale aircraft, which will replace part of the country's ageing air force fleet, was first mooted in 2012 and the deal was signed in January 2016.
India entered exclusive negotiations on buying 126 of the fighters four years ago, but the number of planes was scaled back during tortuous negotiations over the cost and assembly of the planes in India.

France’s Green Party is struggling to gain political momentum eight months before the first round of the country’s presidential elections, even as the ruling Socialist Party takes a pummelling in opinion polls.

The wife of former French president Jacques Chirac was admitted to hospital Wednesday “to rest and recuperate” on the same day a prominent French politician falsely announced on Twitter that her husband had died.
Beadette Chirac, 83, was said to be “exhausted” following her husband’s hospitalisation for a lung infection, the couple’s son-in-law Frédéric Salat-Baroux told AFP.
The news follows the Twitter announcement by former French housing minister Christine Boutin that Jacques Chirac, also 83, had died on Wednesday. His family denied the rumour.
"President Chirac is being treated for a lung infection and I want to pay homage to the exceptional quality of the medical teams," Salat-Baroux, who was the former president’s chief of staff from 2005 to 2007, said in response to Boutin’s tweet – “Mort de #Chirac” – that caused widespread outrage on the social network.

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen on Saturday named the young politician David Rachline as the director of her presidential campaign, a risky choice who should appeal to party loyalists, while she reaches out to a broader audience.
Le Pen made the widely expected announcement during a speech to supporters in the Mediterranean city of Fréjus in an event that, by her own account, marked “the start of the mobilization for this presidential campaign”.
Rachline, 28, has been the mayor of Fréjus since April 2014 and the youngest member of France’s Senate since October of the same year. A ceremony to honour the victims of terrorism was held in Paris Monday, with French President François Hollande leading tributes to those killed, injured and bereaved in the recent spate of attacks.
Addressing an audience of victims, the bereaved, politicians and officials at the historic Invalides military museum, Hollande promised to boost compensation and to step up the fight against terrorism.
"We must ensure that sustained action is taken to anticipate attacks, deter them and stop them. It's a constant battle and it will need even more resources," he said.
The French president’s speech was followed by a solemn reading of the names of the victims of the attacks carried out by Islamist extremists last year in Paris and in July in Nice.

French authorities took a teenager in for questioning on Monday over a false terror alert that mobilised dozens of police officers in Paris on Saturday. Two adolescents had been brazenly bragging about the hoax online.
On Saturday, French police received a call from a certain “Father Mathis” claiming ten armed men had entered Saint-Leu-Saint-Gilles church in central Paris and taken about twenty people hostage. Not only are the pranksters good impersonators, they also reportedly the church’s phone number to make it look as if the call was coming from inside the church itself.

President François Hollande will be awarded the 2016 “World Statesman Award” at a ceremony in New York on Monday for his “leadership in safeguarding democracy and freedom in a time of terrorist attacks” in France.
Hollande, who will already be in New York to attend a United Nations Security Council meeting, is being recognised not only for his “leadership” but also for “his contribution to global stability and security".
The prize, which is awarded by the New York-based interfaith Appeal of Conscience foundation, honours “individuals who support peace, prosperity, liberty and promote tolerance, human dignity and human rights, both in their own countries and inteationally through cooperation with other leaders”.
The foundation confirmed to FRANCE 24 that the president will attend the ceremony at the famed Waldorf Astoria New York hotel in person.

Just under 30 percent of France’s 3 to 4 million Muslims reject the country’s secular laws, according to an Ifop poll published by the French weekly Joual du Dimanche.
When asked if they considered the Islamic legal and moral code of sharia to be more important than the French Republic’s laws, 29 percent of respondents answered “yes.”
The poll found that 20 percent of male Muslim respondents and 28 percent of female Muslim respondents were in favour of the face veil, the niqab, and of the burqa which covers both face and body.
Another 60 percent said they were in favour of letting girls and women wear a head scarf at schools and universities which is forbidden at France’s secular public institutions.
Deadly attacks by Islamist militants, including bombings and shootings in Paris which killed 130 people last November and a truck attack in Nice killing more than 80 people in July, have raised tensions between communities in France.

Former French president Jacques Chirac, 83, was admitted to hospital on Sunday with a lung infection, his son-in-law said.
Chirac, who led France from 1995 to 2007, was “hospitalised this moing at Pitie-Salpetriere (hospital in Paris) to be treated for a lung infection,” Frederic Salat-Baroux told AFP, adding he would remain there “in the coming days.”
The popular ex-president had just retued from a visit to Morocco, Salat-Baroux added.

Chirac, who served two terms as head of state, is probably best remembered inteationally for his opposition to the US military intervention in Iraq in 2003.
A small stroke while in office in 2005 weakened him, and he is now rarely seen in public.

A French union activist who lost an eye this week when protesters against labour reforms clashed with security forces said Saturday he was going to take legal against the police.
"I am going to file an official complaint myself. I will do everything to ensure justice is done," Laurent Theron, 46, told the BFM television news network.
The Solidaires union said in a statement that Theron had "apparently been struck by a fragment of a (tear gas) grenade fired by police."
"Unfortunately, despite the care he received in hospital he lost the use of his eye," the union said, adding that "nothing justified the use of force" against Theron.
The statement said that Theron had been talking with colleagues in Paris' Place de la Republique towards the end of the demonstration and that nothing in the vicinity posed a threat to the police.
The police "nevertheless charged with massive use of tear gas and stun grenades."

A 15-year-old French boy has been arrested in Paris and remanded in custody on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack, a source close to the investigation said on Friday.
He is the third French 15-year-old in just five days to have been remanded in custody and placed under formal investigation for terrorism.
The arrests follow calls by the Islamic State (IS) group to attack soft targets in the West.
The boy, described as an A-grade student who denounced the November 13 terror attacks in Paris which left 130 people dead, was arrested Wednesday and remanded in custody on Friday over his links to a terrorist network. A Corsica court on Friday handed out prison sentences to five men over a mass beach brawl on the Mediterranean island, in a racially charged case that captured wide attention in France over the summer.
The violent brawl in August injured five people and prompted the mayor of the northe Corsican village of Sisco to ban the Islamic burkini swimsuit, which was initially thought to have been at the centre of the row. Around 100 police officers were deployed to quell the clashes.
Hundreds of people gathered outside the court in Bastia on Thursday to support two local men who faced charges over the incident alongside three brothers of Moroccan origin who grew up on another part of the French island.
Mustapha Benhaddou was sentenced to two years in prison for armed violence, while his brothers Abdelillah and Jamal both received suspended sentences of six months.

Clashes erupted on Thursday as thousands of demonstrators protesting against a controversial labour law took to the streets of Paris and cities across France. The interior ministry said 32 people had been arrested in connection with the violence.
France's main CGT union estimated that 40,000 people had tued out to protest in Paris by mid-afteoon. Police, however, put the figure much lower, saying between 12,500 and 13,500 tued out for the demonstration.
Unions said 170,000 were protesting across France. The interior ministry put the number of demonstrators at between 77,500 and 78,500, close to police estimates of 78,000.
“It’s begun, there are clashes going on between young demonstrators and CRS riot police,” FRANCE 24 joualist Julie Dungelhoeff reported from the Paris demonstration.
AFP reported that 15 police officers have been injured in the violence. Some 32 people have so far been arrested, according to the interior ministry.

German police Tuesday arrested three men with forged Syrian passports accused of being Islamic State (IS) group militants and labelled a possible "sleeper cell" with links to the November Paris attackers.
More than 200 police commandos took part in the pre-dawn raids in northe Germany to detain the men, who were suspected of either plotting an attack or awaiting orders to commit one.
The men were identified only as Mahir al-H., 17, Ibrahim M., 18, and Mohamed A., 26, in a statement issued by federal prosecutors.
They left Syria last October and travelled via Turkey and Greece -- a route used by tens of thousands of refugees and migrants -- and arrived in Germany in mid-November.

Alstom will go ahead with plans to shut down manufacturing at its historic Belfort plant, its CEO said on Tuesday, setting up a confrontation with President François Hollande who vowed that "everything will be done" to stop its closure.
The French engineering firm, which makes the country's famed TGV high-speed trains and is 20 percent controlled by the state, said last week it would stop making rolling stock at the factory in easte France, where its first steam locomotive was built back in 1880.

For the 15th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in the United States, a French polling firm conducted a survey to gauge the impact of conspiracy theories among the French.
The main finding? According to polling firm Odoxa, the majority of French people believe that the full story of that day has yet to be revealed to the public.
Two thirds of those surveyed believe that key information has been hidden. That number gets higher the younger the respondents are, peaking with those under 25, 75 percent of whom believe facts are being withheld, as opposed to only 55 percent of those over 65.
The hijackers of the planes were identified as being linked to al Qaeda, but 45 percent of French people think that we still don’t know who was behind the attacks.

French anti-terror judges on Saturday charged a woman over a failed attack near Paris' Notre Dame cathedral, where a car containing gas canisters was found last weekend.
The woman, named as 29-year-old Oella G., was remanded in custody after being charged with association with a terrorist group and attempted murder by an organised group, prosecutors said.
She had been known to security services for planning to head to Syria.
Oella G. was arrested in southe France on Tuesday with her boyfriend, who has since been released.
According to investigators, her fingerprints were found in the Peugeot car which was discovered abandoned last Sunday a few hundred metres (yards) from Notre Dame with five gas cylinders and three bottles of diesel fuel inside.
A woman linked to Oella G. was also part of a suspected trio of women jihadists foiled by the authorities before they could carry out a fresh attack, investigators said.
